Substitution Drill

This section is made up of a number of model sentences. One or two words in each sentence are underscored. Below each group is a series of isolated words. Substitute these words, one by one, for the underscored word, making any necessary changes in the rest of the sentence. Listen to the audio for the model sentence first, then work through each substitution item aloud before checking.

Variation Drill

This section is made up of several groups of sentences. Each group is headed by a model sentence which is underscored. Cover the right-hand side of the page. Read each English variation silently and give the German version aloud without stopping, with proper pronunciation and intonation. If you have to translate word by word, you need more practice with the basic sentences.

Vocabulary Drill

Cover the right-hand side of the page and give the German equivalent for each English cue. These drills focus on key vocabulary from this unit used in context. Repeat until you can respond quickly and accurately.

Translation Drill

Cover the right-hand side of the page and give the German version of each sentence in the English column. Go over the drill several times until you can do it confidently and without hesitation.

Response Drill

Prepare this drill in advance. The questions relate to the situations in the Basic Sentences. The suggested answers are not the only correct ones — feel free to vary them or substitute your own formulations within the vocabulary and structures covered.

Conversation Practice

Listen to each conversational bout in the audio several times before attempting it. Then take both roles yourself. Focus on giving an accurate equivalent in your own words, not on memorizing exactly. If you stumble, move on and return to it later.

Situations

Act out the following situations as freely and fluently as you can, making use of all the patterns you have learned.
