Variation Drill

1. Wir setzen uns in das grosse Wohnzimmer. We'll sit down in the big living room.

a.	Let's carry the suitcases up to the attic.	Wir wollen die Koffer auf den Boden tragen.
b.	He's putting the chair behind the desk.	Er stellt den Stuhl hinter den Schreibtisch.
c.	Please sit down beside my son.	Setzen Sie sich bitte neben meinen Sohn.
d.	She's putting the woolen blanket over the back of the chair.	Sie legt die Wolldecke über die Stuhllehne.
e.	He's putting the letters under his newspaper.	Er legt die Briefe unter seine Zeitung.
f.	The kitchen table goes between the refrigerator and the range.	Der Küchentisch kommt zwischen den Kühlschrank und den Herd.

2. Wir wohnen neben der alten Post. We live next to the old post office.

3. Stellen Sie den Papierkorb bitte unter den Schreibtisch. Please put the wastepaper basket under the desk.

a.	Hang this picture above the large sofa.	Hängen Sie dieses Bild über das grosse Sofa.
b.	Please drive your car around behind the house.	Fahren Sie bitte Ihren Wagen hinter das Haus.
c.	She puts the little table beside her easy-chair.	Sie stellt den kleinen Tisch neben ihren Sessel.
d.	We're moving to ('into') another city.	Wir ziehen in eine andere Stadt.
e.	Drive up onto this parking lot.	Fahren Sie doch auf diesen Parkplatz.
f.	He sits down in front of the big window.	Er setzt sich vor das grosse Fenster.

4. Die Zeitung liegt hinter der Lampe. The newspaper is behind the lamp.

a.	The pictures are still in the big crate.	Die Bilder sind noch in der grossen Kiste.
b.	My car stops at the corner there.	Mein Wagen hält dort an der Ecke.
c.	He's sitting behind his friend.	Er sitzt hinter seinem Bekannten.
d.	The blanket is lying over the back of the chair.	Die Wolldecke liegt über der Stuhllehne.
e.	The bus stops in front of the new bank.	Der Autobus hält vor der neuen Bank.
f.	The big easy-chair is between the bookcase and the smoking table.	Der grosse Sessel steht zwischen dem Bücherschrank und dem Rauchtisch.

5. Das ist ein Zimmer mit vielen neuen Möbeln. That's a room with a lot of nice furniture.

a.	We're staying with nice German relatives.	Wir wohnen bei netten deutschen Verwandten.
b.	They work in large new offices.	Sie arbeiten in grossen neuen Büros.
c.	He introduces him to a few American gentlemen.	Er macht ihn mit einigen amerikanischen Herren bekannt.
d.	I don't like to live in old, small hotels.	Ich wohne nicht gern in alten kleinen Hotels.

6. Wir haben gute französische Zeitungen. We have some good French newspapers.

7. Der grosse Schreibtisch steht auf dem Teppich. The big desk is on the rug.

a.	The freight is still in the cellar.	Das Frachtgut steht noch im Keller.
b.	Are you going to put the new floor lamp in the corner or next to the easy chair?	Stellen Sie die neue Stehlampe in die Ecke oder neben den Sessel?
c.	Put the new sofa there against the wall, please.	Stellen Sie das neue Sofa bitte dort an die Wand.
d.	Our car is behind the house.	Unser Wagen steht hinter dem Haus.
e.	Are the books already in the book-case?	Stehen die Bücher schon im Bücherschrank?
f.	Put the typewriter on the table next to the lamp.	Stellen Sie die Schreibmaschine auf den Tisch neben die Lampe.

8. Er legt den Füller und das Briefpapier auf den Schreibtisch. He puts the fountain pen and the stationery on the desk.

a.	Where do you want to put the carpet?	Wo wollen Sie den Teppich hinlegen?
b.	The rug is already in the living room.	Der Teppich liegt schon im Wohnzimmer.
c.	The letter is under your new book.	Der Brief liegt unter Ihrem neuen Buch.
d.	Put the passport in your desk.	Legen Sie den Pass in Ihren Schreibtisch.
e.	The woolen blankets are in the bedroom on our beds.	Die Wolldecken liegen im Schlafzimmer auf unseren Betten.

9. Stellen Sie den Papierkorb unter den Tisch. Put the wastebasket under the table.

a.	In front of the window is a small desk.	Vor dem Fenster steht ein kleiner Schreibtisch.
b.	Next to the sofa is an easy-chair.	Neben dem Sofa steht ein Sessel.
c.	He's putting the round table in front of the sofa.	Er stellt den runden Tisch vor das Sofa.
d.	Where shall I put the chair?	Wo soll ich den Stuhl hinstellen?
e.	On the desk is a pretty lamp.	Auf dem Schreibtisch steht eine schöne Lampe.

10. Die Kinder liegen schon im Bett. The children are already in bed.

a.	The questionnaires are on my desk.	Die Fragebogen liegen auf meinem Schreibtisch.
b.	The secretary puts the forms in the consul's office.	Die Sekretärin legt die Formulare ins Büro des Konsuls.
c.	The quilt is on a chair in our bedroom.	Die Steppdecke liegt auf einem Stuhl in unserem Schlafzimmer.
d.	The new paper is on the table by the door.	Die neue Zeitung liegt auf dem Tisch neben der Tür.
e.	Put the book on my desk please.	Legen Sie das Buch bitte auf meinen Schreibtisch.

11. Stellen Sie das Sofa an die Wand und die Stehlampe daneben. Put the sofa over against the wall and the floor lamp next to it.

a.	I'll put the little table beside the easy chair and the smoking table in front of it.	Den kleinen Tisch stelle ich neben den Sessel und den Rauchtisch davor.
b.	Does the floor lamp go beside the smoking table? No, behind it.	Kommt die Stehlampe neben den Rauchtisch? Nein, dahinter.
c.	Put the chair in front of the desk please and the wastebasket under it.	Stellen Sie den Stuhl bitte vor den Schreibtisch und den Papierkorb darunter.
d.	We'll put the sofa over against the wall and hang the picture above it.	Das Sofa stellen wir an die Wand und das Bild hängen wir darüber.
e.	In the bedroom there are two beds (standing) and between them there is a chair.	Im Schlafzimmer stehen zwei Betten und dazwischen steht ein Stuhl.

12. Ist der Koffer bei meinem anderen Gepäck? Ja, er ist auch dabei. Is the suitcase with my other luggage? Yes, it's there along with it.

a.	Mr. Becker is going to America soon; did you know that? Yes, he talks about it a lot.	Herr Becker fährt bald nach Amerika, wissen Sie das schon? Ja, er spricht viel davon.
b.	The typewriter is not good, but I can still write with ('on') it.	Die Schreibmaschine ist nicht gut, aber ich kann darauf noch schreiben.
c.	I'd like to buy a house, but I don't have any money for it.	Ich möchte ein Haus kaufen, aber ich habe kein Geld dafür.
d.	I like your new suit, and your necktie goes well with it too.	Ihr neuer Anzug gefällt mir gut, und die Krawatte passt auch gut dazu.
